Start with a clear painting scope
Before requesting an estimate, list the rooms or exterior surfaces you want painted and any concerns about their condition. Photos, preferred colors, timing needs, and access details can help frame the conversation.

What to discuss during the estimate
Walk through the proposed work area and identify the surfaces to include, surfaces to exclude, existing coating problems, and any household or access constraints. Use the room and exterior notes below to organize your questions.
Keep the project details in writing
Ask for the proposed preparation, products, number of coats, protection, cleanup, price, payment schedule, and scheduling assumptions to appear in the written estimate. Clarify how a change in scope will be discussed before additional work begins.
Living Room Painting
Identify the walls, ceiling, trim, doors, and built-ins to include. Discuss furniture protection, access, and how the space will be used while work is underway.
Kitchen Painting
Distinguish wall and trim painting from cabinet work. Ask which surfaces are included, what preparation and coatings are proposed, and what access or curing time the work may require.
Bedroom Painting
Review the walls, ceiling, trim, and closet areas to include. Discuss belongings, furniture, ventilation, and when the room will be available for normal use.
Exterior Painting
Identify siding, trim, brick, decks, or fences to assess. The preparation, cleaning method, repairs, coating system, and access should be specific to the condition of each surface.
Compare the complete scope
When comparing proposals, check whether they cover the same surfaces, preparation, coating system, protection, and closeout. Ask about unclear exclusions or allowances before choosing a contractor.
Questions to resolve before scheduling
Colors and finishes: Confirm the colors, sheen, products, and any samples or approvals needed before materials are ordered.
Preparation and access: Review which repairs and preparation are included, who will move belongings, and how the crew will reach each work area.
Schedule and closeout: Discuss the expected sequence, household access, weather or drying-time considerations, and the final walkthrough.
Review the proposed coating system
Product choice depends on the surface, existing finish, exposure, and intended use. Ask which primer and finish products are proposed, how many coats are included, and what maintenance guidance applies.
Confirm price, payment, and warranty terms
Read the payment schedule, exclusions, and any warranty terms in the written proposal. Ask for clarification where the scope or responsibilities are unclear. If licensing or insurance documentation is important to your decision, request current documentation before scheduling.
