How To Paint Your Home Exterior
A fresh coat of paint can really make your home look brand new, and we’re here to help! Of course, here at Painter Ready, we can get the job done for you, but we also wanted to give you a few facts and tips on exterior painting in case you’re up for tackling this project on your own.
• PAINT COSTS
A gallon of exterior paint can range from $17 to $100+, so there is a lot to choose from, not to mention a paint for every budget! We generally use Sherwin-Williams Super Paint but you may choose to opt for a more budget-friendly A100.
• HOW MUCH PAINT TO BUY?
To calculate how many gallons you need for siding, measure and add up each wall’s total square footage, including windows and doors, and divide by 90 percent of the coverage rate printed on the can.
• HOW LONG WILL MY EXTERIOR PAINT LAST?
That depends on the paint, the prep, and the surface. Two coats of top-quality paint over primed wood might last 10 to 15 years. Two coats on stucco can hold up significantly longer.
• THE IMPORTANCE OF WASHING YOUR HOME PRIOR TO PAINTING
It removes the dirt and broken-down paint residues that keep fresh coats from adhering and gets rid of mildew that grows on paint in all but the most arid climates.
• THE IMPORTANCE OF PRIMER
Primers are formulated to penetrate, seal, and provide a good surface for the top coats to stick to. We highly recommend primer if you’re changing colors or if it’s been a little too long since you’ve painted.
• SPRAY OR BRUSH?
Most homeowners won’t want the complexity of spraying their home, which is why we recommend a rolling/brushing application. Spraying can be significantly faster, but if you choose to do it, consider back brushing to increase the quality of the finish.
